This is a tragic case
We have learned that a police chase that occurred at the beginning of June killed a pedestrian in downtown LA. The incident happened when police attempted to stop a suspect on a motorcycle for running a red light. The suspect then fled from the police and went through multiple freeways. He then exited Alameda Street and struck a pedestrian.
Paramedics attempted to save the man who was struck, but he died at the scene of the crash. The suspect, identified as Brian Jesse Leon, was taken to the hospital and treated for multiple injuries, including a broken spine. He has since been arrested. Police say he had two outstanding warrants.
Right now, police are still investigating this incident, including whether or not the officers should have backed off.
Pedestrian crashes are not uncommon in and around Los Angeles, and they are often caused by the careless or negligent actions of a driver. For the latest reporting year in California, there were over 15,000 pedestrian crash injuries and 858 pedestrian crash fatalities. These numbers are increasing every year.
- Nearly every pedestrian crash results in an injury or a fatality.
Pedestrians do not have armor. They are the most vulnerable group in and around the roadways. When a pedestrian is struck, they suffer from two injury-causing impacts – one with a vehicle and another with the ground. For those who survive these incidents, it is not uncommon for us to see the following injuries:
- Spinal cord injuries (with possible paralysis)
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Internal organ damage/internal bleeding
- Broken or dislocated bones
- Severe lacerations or amputations
Like the case above, most pedestrian crashes should never occur. All too often, we find they are caused when drivers fail to yield the right-of-way, are distracted by their phones or are impaired by alcohol.
