Pedestrian Statistics

The most recent studies show that around 5, 380 pedestrians were killed in the United States from traffic accidents. This number breaks down to almost 2 deaths an hour. Who knew walking could be so dangerous and risky? In addition to the deaths, almost 129,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments because of traffic accidents. The most vulnerable to pedestrian fatalities are those 65 years old and older and 15 years old and younger.

Age has a lot to do with who survives a pedestrian accident. It makes sense because the older you get the more fragile your body is to being hit on impact. People who are 65 or older account for 19% of all pedestrian deaths and 13% of those who survived but where injured. When an older person is hit by a car they tend to fall forward or backward. The injuries sustained are typical to the back, head, or pelvic area. Each of these accidents is traumatic and requires lots of body energy; the kind of energy that is not sustainable in the elderly.

Those who are 15 years old and younger are also very susceptible. Even though young children tend to have more energy to fight, because they are so small they are more likely to be struck in the head or chest. The impact to the head and chest can cause serious damage which results in catastrophic injury. The age least impacted is everything in between.
