We know that the last thing you expect when you get on your bike to go for a ride is that you will encounter a dangerous situation. Most bicyclists do what they can to ride safely, but they cannot predict the actions of other drivers on the roadway. We have learned that a local bicyclist has lost their lives in an incident that police say may be related to street racing.
At JML Law, we are here when you need a Los Angeles bicycle crash attorney. Let us work to secure the compensation you deserve for all of your crash-related expenses.
What Happened In This Case
We have learned that a bicyclist has died and a motorist was injured following a collision downtown in Los Angeles. The incident took place in the 2100 block of South Alameda Street. A Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson says that a car was northbound on Alameda when it struck the cyclist.
“The Honda continued northbound along Alameda, pushing the bicyclist along until he lost control at the railroad tracks,” the captain said. “And they slid across the street and struck a utility pole, at which point the bicyclist was killed.”
Investigators say that street racing may have played a role in the crash and that the vehicle was traveling at high rates of speed. The driver of the Honda is being detained at the hospital under suspicion of negligent manslaughter.
We know that, during the latest reporting year in California, there were 278,000 vehicle crashes. Out of those, there were:
- 14,215 pedestrian crash injuries
- 867 pedestrian crash fatalities
We know that these incidents are almost always bad for the pedestrians involved. It is not uncommon for us to see the following injuries as a result of pedestrian crashes:
- Spinal cord injuries (with possible paralysis)
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Internal organ damage/internal bleeding
- Broken or dislocated bones
- Severe lacerations or amputations
Each of these injuries has the ability to impact a person’s life. If they are unable to work while they recover from their injuries, they could lose the income they need to survive.
As the story above shows us, pedestrians can never predict what could happen and all too often negligent drivers cause them harm. Unfortunately, this also means that victims are left holding the bills in the aftermath.
