Pedestrian In “Grave” Condition

We are learning that police have arrested one person on suspicion of DUI after a pedestrian was seriously hurt recently in Shadow Hills.

The incident occurred on Sunland Boulevard near Stonehurst Avenue. Police say that a black Infiniti SUV and a Honda Accord were traveling westbound on Sunland. The Honda, while traveling at a high rate of speed, hit the Infiniti. The impact caused the Infinity driver to lose control and strike the curb. The Infiniti then overturned onto an unpaved sidewalk and struck a man walking his dog.

The Honda driver attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended and arrested by responding officers.

We Know This Happens

Drunk drivers are dangerous drivers and they need to be held accountable if they cause injuries. For the latest reporting year in California, alcohol-impaired drivers were responsible for 29% of all traffic deaths. However, overall, there were over 278,000 injuries in the state. Other common causes of vehicle crashes include:

  • Those who speed or operate recklessly
  • Distracted drivers (phones, cell phones, etc.)
  • Failing to yield the right-of-way
  • And more

Victims of pedestrian crash often sustain serious injuries. We commonly see the following in the aftermath of these incidents:

  • Broken and dislocated bones
  • Severe lacerations
  • Internal organ damage
  • Internal bleeding
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries

There were more than 14,000 pedestrian crash injuries during the latest full year of data available for the state. Pedestrians have no protection from the force of a vehicle slamming into them. When they are struck, they usually suffer from two impacts – one with the vehicle and one with the ground. Aside from the massive medical expenses pedestrian crash victims face, they often lose their jobs while they are rehabbing from their injuries.
