Gun Shots Cause Brain Injury

By: JML Law | May 2, 2019.
Gun Shots Cause Brain Injury

Imagine sitting outside on the balcony of your apartment enjoying the evening when you are startled by shots fired. You run into your apartment and hide until the gunshots stop and the commotion slows down. Some neighborhoods hear more gunshots than others. However, even if you have never really seen a gun, you know what one sounds like when you hear it. Gunshot wounds are severe and dangerous. Depending on where the bullet enters and leaves can depend on if the victim lives or dies. Our brain injury attorneys at JML Law have successfully represented victims of brain injury caused by various reasons. The one thing all clients have in common is that it wasn’t their fault and the gunshot was due to the negligent behavior of someone else.

Gun Shot Statistics in the United States

Brain injuries are also called Traumatic Brain injuries (TBI). Brain injuries are delicate situations. People suffering from brain injuries are typically in car accidents, falling from high places, trapped between two things, or having gunshot wounds. Recent studies state that 12% of brain injuries are caused by gunshot wounds. Gunshot wounds are the leading cause of brain injury in the age group 25-34. For example, eight were injured, and two were critically injured in a San Bernardino shootout in an apartment complex. All victims were given medical treatment on the scene while others were whisked away to the hospital. One victim was a 17-year-old who was shot in the head.

People who are hospitalized with brain injury from gunshot wounds have a 50% chance of surviving if they survived through the initial trauma. More than likely the victim has a 90% fatality rate and usually dies on the way to the hospital. If the 17-year-old victim survives, he or she has a 50% chance of needing anti-seizure medication for the rest of his or her life. Getting a brain injury is life-altering. Life as you knew it is gone and you must now accommodate for the new lifestyle. Brain injuries are more than physically traumatic; they are emotionally traumatic, too.
