High Walk Score, But Low Safety

Labeling Los Angeles as a bustling city is under-representing the true vibrancy of the city. Los Angeles is one of the densest cities in the United States boasting a whopping 4 million people inhabiting the city. Downtown Los Angeles also boasts a high walking score of 95. This means that when you are downtown you are able to access amenities quickly and without much hassle. Los Angeles, though, is really a car city that is trying to be more of a walking city. With investments in public transit that will cater to downtown and the surrounding metro area, people are growing accustomed to ditching their cars and using their legs.

The greatest part about a walking city, other than the reduction in pollution, is that you get to experience all Los Angeles has to offer without the pain of finding parking, going frantic searching for signs to see if you got a speeding ticket, or cringing when you see your side view mirror gone due to poor drivers. Like any activity, when you start to get used to a habit you tend to go into autopilot while getting distracted by other things like your phone or a conversation. When you are walking alongside busy streets where cars are speeding past, you may not think to double-check if that car making a right turn has seen you in the crosswalk. You may not think to double-check that a car is paying attention to the crosswalk signs. Then, by not paying attention you end up getting hit by a car!

The car hits you in a way that causes severe injury. You are taken to the hospital and are suffering from broken legs and ribs. The doctor reassures you that in a few months you will be able to walk and run again, but you will need to be on bed rest while your bones and muscles heal. On top of all of this, you just started a new job. The insurance hasn’t kicked in yet and you don’t have any time accrued for vacation or sick time. Your boss is willing to work with you, but you have come to the conclusion that you won’t be getting the same pay because now you have to get onto disability. Furthermore, you have a daughter and a son who are paternal twins. They are both turning 13 and you planned a non-refundable camping trip somewhere in the Midwest. The list goes on and on.

If you are a pedestrian that was hit by a car it is not your fault. We repeat it is not your fault. Our Los Angeles pedestrian accident attorney at JML Law, a Professional Law Corporation, understands that when you are out of commission so is everyone else who depends on you. If you were walking and following the rules while the car driver was being negligent, you deserve full compensation for your injuries. Don’t settle for just some money.
