When people think about drunk driving accidents they typically think about two cars hitting each other. Even though that is more than likely true, drunk drivers are also prone to hit telephone poles, trees, guard rails, and, unfortunately, pedestrians. Drunk driving in California is increasing over the years. More people are driving under the influence and it is showing in the number of arrests and accidents where people are injured or killed. There is no real way to combat drunk driving other than through education and offering solutions to those who drink such as ridesharing or having a sober driver.
Those who are involved in a drunk driving incident and are sober are more likely to suffer injury than the drunk driver. Those who are drunk and hit are already relaxed due to alcohol consumption. Their bodies are already loose, so when they get to hit their bodies act more like jello. When you are sober and you see an accident happen you tense your body because that is a normal reaction. When you tense your body it is like a solid object slamming into another solid object. There is nothing but tension which creates more energy. Depending on the severity of the crash even the drunk driver can die. However, there are certain kinds of drunk driving accidents that put a person more at risk for dying and that is when a pedestrian is struck.
Pedestrian Death
Around 11 pm police were called to Disneyland Drive in Anaheim in response to a pedestrian being struck by a potential drunk driver. The 47-year-old woman is being held in jail under the suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol which caused great bodily injury and gross vehicular manslaughter. While driving she hit a tree, a pole, and an electrical box before hitting the victim who was walking innocently down the road. The 54-year-old man was walking in the designated walking area when struck by the driver as her PT Cruiser jumped the curb to hit him. The man was taken to the hospital as soon as the ambulance could retrieve him. He was being treated for major injuries. Upon arriving at the hospital he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The woman is held at the Anaheim Detention Facility with bail set at $100,000. Drunk driving is not only a danger to the driver but to those around them whether it be other cars or those who are walking. California is doing its best to prevent driving under the influence, but there is only so much our police force can do. In the end, it is a personal decision. Unfortunately, it just takes one poor decision to change someone’s life forever.
