Hepatitis Contamination In Costco. Could You Have A Product Liability Claim?

When we go shopping at our store of choice, we are putting our trust and essentially our health in their hands. Costco is a renowned store found all across the U.S where customers can purchase bulk groceries and other items. Until recently, Costco had an impeccable record. There is an investigation underway for the newly recalled Nature’s Touch Organic Berry Cherry Blend. It is a frozen fruit product found in most Costco stores and is said to be linked to Hepatitis A infections. If you have purchased this product and fear you may have the infection seek medical attention and contact a Los Angeles product liability attorney immediately

What is hepatitis A

Hepatitis is a virus that affects the functionality of the liver, it comes in three forms A, B, and C. Hepatitis A is transmitted by ingesting contaminated food and water, or through contact with an infected person. The world health organization (WHO) claims that all suffers from the virus almost always fully recover. They also state “very small proportions die from fulminant [sudden and severe] hepatitis. Unlike Hepatitis B and C, Hepatitis A infection does not cause chronic liver disease and is rarely fatal, but it can cause debilitating symptoms and acute liver failure if not treated”

The symptoms of hepatitis A include:

  • Fever
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Stomach Cramps
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Dark Urine
  • Fatigue

The world health organization added: “Symptoms are usually mild, and the illness usually lasts one to two weeks. Although severe cases can last several months, most people recover without treatment. It is rare for healthy adults to die from Hepatitis A, and the illness does not become chronic.”

What to do if you find yourself in a similar situation

If you are already vaccinated for hepatitis then there is no need to worry as the vaccination lasts a lifetime. If you face contact with a product that is thought to be contaminated with hepatitis then it is important you do not touch the product and dispose of it properly. Place the item in another plastic bag and avoid contact as much as possible. Wash your hands after you dispose of it. If you suspect a similar product could carry the infection, be cautious and do not consume it.
